Green Getaways

Trends

In a state ranked at the top of most green living lists, it’s not surprising that couples, like Portlanders Michael Cady Russell and Mary Kate Fellows Russell, are choosing eco-friendly transport options. The Russells hired PDX Pedicab, with its fleet of modern bike-powered “rickshaws” that each carry two or three passengers, to shuttle the wedding party and guests from their July 26, 2008, ceremony at the Gerding Armory Theater to the reception at the Portland Art Museum. “We didn’t like the idea of people getting into a car for less than a mile trip,” says Kate. “And everyone loved it. They got to see the city as they were racing through downtown.” Other couples are keeping it simple by riding off into the sunset on a tandem bike (more cheeky options: skateboards or roller skates). Of course, winter weddings may require a vehicle with more shelter, which is where EcoShuttle steps in with its fleet of 100% biodiesel fueled vehicles. And brand new on the road: Double Decker PDX, a bright red, London-style double decker bus updated with a biodiesel engine and carbon offsets.
