The Modern Man Barber Shop in Portland has all of the manly niceties a groom might require in preparation for his wedding day from pre-shave hot towels to a complimentary shot of whiskey to calm any jitters. “It’s the kind of place my dad went to with his dad,” explains owner Chris Espinoza of his micro-chain of family-owned barbershops with locations in the Alberta Arts District, on Southeast Hawthorne and their newest parlor on North Mississippi. With decor that includes copious amounts of taxidermy and well-worn leather seating, the Modern Man is a prime spot to host a bachelor party where men are encouraged to be men—well-groomed and close-shaved men, that is. “It’s a chance to have some camaraderie and encouragement before making a big commitment,” says Espinoza. The free whiskey doesn’t hurt either.
