Erin & Eric
Jan. 2, 2010 at the Treasury Ballroom in Portland
How They Met: With a little help from technology. Erin Akagi first fell for Eric Shelton while the two were studying abroad in Tokyo in 2003, but her crush went unrequited until they reconnected on Facebook two years later. They fell in love long-distance over email and Skype while Eric spent another year in Tokyo, until he finally moved to Erin’s hometown of Portland.
How He Proposed: After settling in Seattle in 2008, Eric surprised Erin by filling their first home together with candles and asking her to marry him.
How They Wed: They chose the historic Treasury Ballroom in downtown Portland for its convenience for out-of-town guests and a few other bonuses: a gorgeous grand staircase, marble floors and the classic architecture of the former bank (vault included). The ceremony and reception reflected their different cultures—favors of Erin’s favorite Japanese cookies in origami boxes handmade by her mother, and instead of cake, their preferred dessert, root beer floats. The couple danced to “Close Your Eyes” by James Taylor, which Eric sang to lull Erin to sleep their first night together.
How They Live Happily Every After: The globetrotting pair stayed on the continent for a honeymoon in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, and are now back at home in Seattle, where Erin works for an accounting firm and Eric is in law school.
