Nancy & Nate
Aug. 27, 2011 at the Portland Art Museum
Until one fateful evening out in Portland with friends, Nancy Tonkin had only known real estate broker Nate Zoucha as an acquaintance. “That night we couldn’t take our eyes off each other,” remembers Nancy, a manager at Audi Wilsonville. “I told my best friend I knew I was going to marry him.” And her foretelling came true, just 10 months later, in September 2010, at a surprise getaway to the Four Seasons in Seattle—complete with sparkling wine, rose petals and one eager man on bended knee.
The couple went equally luxe for their August black-tie wedding at the downtown Portland Art Museum, awash in pinks, blacks and whites. Blush tones infused the breathtaking ceremony in the downstairs Fields Ballroom and popped into brighter hues for the reception upstairs in the Kridel Grand Ballroom. The cosmopolitan vibe took off with a live jazz band drawing people onto the checkered dance floor.
“We wanted to create a mix of fun and modern with classic and traditional, which totally fits our personalities,” Nancy explains of the theme. Lush draping and dramatic centerpieces contributed to the event’s sophisticated feel, but touches like a candy bar designed by the bride herself, their flower dog (Nate and Nancy’s pug Zoe) and late-night snacks of sliders and tater tots brought a little unexpected pizzazz to the party.
In the midst of this 250-people-strong soirée, heartwarming family moments lent a feeling of intimacy. “Seeing my dad for the first time was super emotional,” says the bride of her walk down the aisle with local car dealership owner Ed Tonkin. The officiant spoke of how Nancy’s Jewish background and Nate’s Catholic faith breathe life each into the other, and the venue itself held its own sentimental touch: Nancy’s grandmother’s memorial gallery. “It was amazing to have her play a part in it all,” says Nancy of her namesake relative.
It wasn’t until every other guest had left that the newlyweds, soaking up the details of the event they’d planned for the past year, hopped into her grandfather’s Rolls Royce and headed out—bound for a 10-day Tahitian honeymoon. Now back home in Portland, Nate, Nancy and little Zoe are hunting for their dream condo in the Pearl District.
