Nora & Tyler

As owner of Portland’s award-winning Bridal Bliss, Nora Sheils plans upwards of 45 weddings a year. Clients will agree that when it comes to making magic with mood and romantic ambiance, Nora is an expert—so much so that she met Tyler, the love of her life, at one of her clients’ weddings. “He said that he knew the night couldn’t end without talking to me,” says Sheils, who marks that day (October 14) as their true anniversary. When it came time for the proposal, however, it was Tyler’s turn to create a little magic for Nora. During an early morning hike in Black Butte, Oregon, Sheils was surprised and speechless to find Tyler on bended knee as they overlooked the beautiful day surrounding them. “I just stared at him for 30 seconds until he finally had to say, “Please say yes!” Of course, any love story involving Sheils finishes with a happy ending. She answered with a resounding, “Yes!” The next big question?

Who should plan the wedding for the wedding planner—but the couple agreed that they could not have anyone less than the best in the business: Sheils herself. “I had an immediate vision!”she proclaims.

With the bride wearing a customized Marisa wedding dress and the groom in Joseph Abboud, Nora and Tyler wed on May 2 in front of 360 guests at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Lake Oswego. A string quartet and gospel choir celebrated the union and, in addition to the Catholic ceremony, the couple incorporated Sheils’ Iraqi heritage by having an Arabic priest bestow a special blessing.

A cocktail hour and reception followed at the century-old Governor Hotel in Portland. Friends and family were welcomed by a dramatic 10-foot illuminated tree decorated with hanging orchids in the couple’s color scheme of cranberry and raspberry. Guests indulged in martinis dispensed from two ice luges while enjoying a live jazz band and an emotional slide show chronicling the couple’s love story. “The energy in the room was amazing,” recalls Sheils. The table centerpieces were brimming with over 1,000 peonies and roses as guests enjoyed a full-scale, sit-down dinner.

Entertainment included performances by belly dancers, a fire dancer, a photo booth with costume props and a raucous evening of music, which inspired a hilarious dance-off. To re-energize, guests were served strawberry milkshakes at midnight and enjoyed a decadent candy buffet.

Today, Nora and Tyler live in Portland, where Nora still runs Bridal Bliss and Tyler works in a commercial real estate. As a bride and the wedding planner, Sheils couldn’t have been happier. “It was absolutely perfect,” she says with a smile.
