Nova & Nicholas

Dec. 31, 2010 at Meriwether’s Restaurant in Portland

How They Met: Working with Nick at a Portland restaurant two years ago, Nova never really thought of him in that way. But when he asked her out for sushi during a heat wave (“It makes you do funny things,” she laughs), she got hooked.

How He Proposed: Over drinks at local ramen joint Biwa, they started talking about getting married only nine months later—“half kidding and half serious,” Nova claims. They felt engaged, but Nova wanted a more romantic story to tell people. Nick officially proposed a couple weeks later when he picked her up from a trip to Hawaii—getting down on one knee in the middle of the airport loading zone!

How They Wed: The entertaining couple decided to turn their wedding into the best New Year’s Eve party they could imagine. Nova chose “glitter, feather and fur” as her colors, which meant a lot of sparkle, plenty of candles, and a sophisticated Great Gatsby vibe. She carried a fur muff instead of bouquet, and the boutonnieres were made of guinea feathers. The 65 guests stayed at the Hotel Deluxe and were shuttled to Meriwether’s tented and heated cobblestone patio for the ceremony, during which everyone held hands, followed by dinner and dancing. Nick “filleted” his steelhead groomscake before the couple danced along to a group singalong of “Glory of Love” from Beaches. The party later migrated to Uptown Billiards, where they brought in live “Karaoke from Hell,” and everyone rang in 2011 with their favors: vintage noisemakers.

How They Live Happily Ever After: After a two week honeymoon in Costa Rica, Nick and Nova moved to a new place in Northeast Portland. He works at El Gaucho and she recently expanded her waxing and skincare business, Bare Esthetics, in the Pearl District.
