Sarah & Robert

Aug. 28, 2010 at Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland

How They Met: While working for the Oregon Symphony (Sarah Rooney works in development and Robert Taylor plays trombone—and is also in Portland band Pink Martini), they eyed each other from afar for three years before he emailed her in July 2009. A few coffee “meetings” later and they were finally dating. How He Proposed: A few days into 2010, Robert realized he should have made the grand gesture at Pink Martini’s New Year’s Eve show. A sheepish “You wanna go shopping?” led them to Gilt to pick out the perfect vintage engagement ring. How They Wed: Downtown Portland’s Chinese Garden was an easy choice—Sarah studied Mandarin—and the Shanghai in the ’30s theme took shape around favorite (and first dance) song “Dream a Little Dream” by Max Raabe. She went glam in a drapey dress and he in a custom three-piece snakeskin suit from local designer Adam Arnold—topped with matching fedoras for him and his six-year-old son, Isaac, the ringbearer. Red, orange and gold erupted all over the manicured gardens and live jazz echoed off the walls. The 100 guests went home with jars of finishing salts tied with a quote from It’s a Wonderful Life: “Salt—so that life will always have flavor.” How They Live Happily Ever After: Sarah, Robert, and Isaac live in Northeast Portland. After a January honeymoon to the Big Island of Hawaii, plans are in the works to buy a Scamp camper and explore family-style.
