Inspiration: Mad Men

Trends

Mad Men is just one of the many shows that I am obsessed with (see True Blood, Weeds, 30 Rock, and most recently, Glee), but it definitely takes the cake in the set decorating/wardrobe department. Surely curating the world of housewives and advertising executives in the early 1960s must not be an easy task! It is only appropriate, then, that as we suffer through the void until the next season starts (July 25!), I would attempt to draw some wedding inspiration from such a wonderful show. Besides, who wouldn't want their husband-to-be to look like Don Draper in a tuxedo?

A Mad Men/'60s style wedding is perfect for the bride who wants to look classy and put together without too much fuss and glitz. This wedding would be elegant and polished, but understated and definitely not over-the-top.

Although there were many different dress styles in the '60s, for this look, stick with an A-line silhouette in a structured fabric, and go short if you are bold enough to show some leg. Keep it classic with white bridal shoes in a pump or peep-toe. Add to the retro look by wearing a short veil (with hat piece or pillbox) and white bridal gloves. We love Drew Barrymore's '60s-inspired makeup and hair look from the SAG awards. The style is right on for the our Mad Men inspiration, but modern enough not to look too retro.

If you are searching for this look in Portland, check out Xtabay and Alexsandra's for vintage finds, and make an appointment for a custom hat/headpiece/veil with Pinkham Millinery.

Also check out historic hotels for a venue, such as Portland's Heathman (pictured).
