Woodsy Folk

Trends

Last week in my wedding playlist post I talked about one of my favorite songs by Fleet Foxes, called "Sun Giant." As I was compiling that playlist, I thought "Wow, that would be such a beautiful song to walk down the aisle to at a really cool, outdoorsy wedding." I couldn't get the lovely image of such a wedding out of my head, so I decided to do my best to visually realize that image and share it with you.

The song prompted my inspiration for a 'woodsy folk' outdoor wedding. The look is simple and natural. No heavy makeup or stiff fabrics allowed. Neutral colors and outdoorsy hints like a bird necklace or floral headband give this look a casual, woodstock-era feel.

To shop for this look in Portland, check out local dress designer Sarah Seven and florists Punch and Fieldwork Floral. Shop for earthy accessories at Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie, and be sure to stop into Sword + Fern on East Burnside for local designer Emily Baker's unique and sustainable jewelry.

Choose a dress with texture in a fabric that moves and flows. Top left dresses by J. Crew, bottom right dresses by Sarah Seven. The neutral face, full brows, and bushy braid from the Alexander Wang Spring runway (top right) are a perfect beauty look for a woodsy folk wedding. Choose flat sandals in a neutral color with some embellishment or detail. How awesome are those macrame sandals (below) by Elizabeth and James?

Details like mason jars as glasses, burlap fabric for a tablecloth, and antlers as decor tie into the natural vibe. Choose garden flowers in subdued tones and go for an asymmetrical bouquet that looks a little overgrown, like it was just picked from a field of wildflowers. Skip the stiff fondant cake icing and go for a more home-baked look, adding a few flowers for decoration.
