Call it the ultimate wedding hangover: cleaning up after the celebration. “The average wedding produces 400-600 pounds of waste,” says Philip Torchio of Bend startup The Broomsmen. “Clean up and trash management is always an afterthought.” Armed with nifty marquee signs, wood-sided recycling bins and biodegradable food service products, The Broomsmen are able to reduce, reuse and recycle waste to the point where there’s nothing left for the landfill. Thinking about waste at the beginning of the wedding planning is key, says Torchio who works directly with planners and venues to create the greenest celebration possible. “We live in such a beautiful place,” Philip says. “This way, we can feel good about celebrating with 200 people.”
