Heirloom Gift: Wedding Quilts

Megan McCarty Liz Hummer

Wedding quilts have been a tradition for generations, but Lori Mason’s crisp designs are not for fulfilling dowries or storing in hope chests. The Portland textile designer began creating modern quilts out of linen and wool suiting in 1999, and her fresh patterns soon gained popularity with couples and families looking to commemorate a new union without being stuffy. “There are traditional wedding quilt patterns, but these are different. The symbolism often comes from the fabrics I receive,” Mason explains. Couples may choose to gather fabrics from their childhood and their respective families to capture their pasts coming together, or ask guests to each bring a swatch of fabric to create a textile “guestbook.” Mason offers several patterns to choose from and also does custom designs.
