There’s something magical about winter time in Portland—especially downtown. As the air chills and folks get into the Christmas spirit, white Christmas lights seem to pop up on every tree west of the Willamette overnight. I couldn’t think of a more romantic setting for a surprise winter proposal than the Pearl District’s twinkling tree-lined streets—keep scrolling to see more of Kostya and Svetlana and to read about the photographer’s behind-the-scenes magic!

From the photographer:

"A few days before the proposal, I was contacted by Kostya, who asked me to photograph his proposal to the girl of his dreams. It was very important to Kostya that Svetlana did not see me during his proposal. Three hours before the proposal, Kostya and I got together at Lovejoy Bakers to execute the plan. It was a freezing afternoon and I wanted to make sure both of us were on the same page. The proposal took place at Jamison Square park in the Pearl District. Being 200+ feet away and in a very dark environment, I immediately knew the that it would be challenging. Prior to proposal I hung a video light from a tree for additional light - thank God it wasn't visible, as all of the trees had lights! When the time came to propose, Svetlana and Kostya went out for a fancy dinner and decided to take (what Svetlana thought was) an evening stroll. Little did she know or expect that the man of her dreams would propose in such a magical place! She was beyond overjoyed when she found out that everything was documented in photographs."
