Wedding Dessert Trend Report: Pie in a Jar

Trends

Move over cupcakes, there's a new trend in wedding desserts: pies! Of course, in the age of mason jars, these trendy pies aren't just any regular old pies, but pie in a jar. Terri Hiles, owner of Portland's All Jarred Up, has perfected the pie in a jar. We're predicting the beginning of a new era of wedding favors and memorable reception desserts.

All Jarred Up specializes in baked goods served in a Mason jar. What began as an experiment on Etsy has now expanded into a successful food cart based in Southwest Portland, in the bustling lunch-hour food cart pod sandwiched between Oak and Stark on SW 2nd Ave.

Hiles started the company with her fiance, Evan Woschnik, in May of 2010. "During a brainstorming session of what we wanted to do with our lives, I said that if I could do anything, I wanted to bake. And more specifically, bake pies," says Hiles. After many trials, errors and taste testing (rough job, right?), the pie in a jar was born.

The idea came from a desire to create something that would transport well -- Hiles has family on the East Coast and wanted the freedom to send them her tasty baked goods. To keep costs low and measure demand, Hiles and Woschnik launched an Etsy shop. Within 24 hours, they had their first orders, and within two months, they were catering large events and weddings on a regular basis. By January of 2013, Hiles and Woschnik moved to Portland with the hopes of opening a food cart. After several months of hard work, they opened All Jarred Up in September of 2013.

Even with the success of the food cart, Hiles still maintains their Etsy account and ships a variety of food nationwide. They ship pies, cookies, breads and sauces baked and served in a Mason jar. "With the cart, we are not as limited to just selling jarred items, so we can go wild," said Hiles. They sell full sized pies and cakes (also available by the slice), large cookies, bars, English toffee, scones, sweet breads and many more. Yum!

One of All Jarred Up's specialties is customizing the jarred goods for weddings. Woschnik is very design-savvy and can create a custom wedding logo sticker for the tops of the jars. Brides can also customize the color of fabric overlay to match the color scheme of the wedding.

All Jarred Up's petite pies would be fabulous for a DIY wedding or a country-themed farm wedding -- the new take on an old favorite will be sure to leave guests wanting more.
